Description
Summary:
Bayung Gede Village in Kintamani Bangli regency is one of traditional village in Bali that geographically resides in mountain area. The uniqueness of Bayung Gede Village makes it categorized as one of the traditional village in Bali.

The uniqueness is particularly visible in the typo morphology of traditional dwelling. Every dwelling unit, at least, has three buildings with different function.

Since the last 15 years, transformation is takin place in these unique dwelling units. The contemporary buildings are obviously incompatible with the traditional buildings rules. The rules and custom for arranging internal dwelling space is violated. This research starts with assumptions that the cause of the typo morphological transformation is the changes of demographical factor and lifestyle which are observable in the activities of the dwellers. The research methods are quantitative, descriptive, and non fundamental research. Quantitative analysis is tied in with the mapping techniques, photographs, and sketches. The 89 questionnaires are distributed to the Bayung Gede dwellers. The results are analysed using frequency distribution and correlational analyses to explain the interrelationship of demographical variables, lifestyle, and dwelling typomorphology.

The research shows that contemporary buildings which violated to traditional buildings rules has been growing more and more in Bayung Gede Village. Only one dwelling unit in the village which is considered as preserving

the traditional rules. The other 300 are transform to some and a large extent especially by constructing contemporary buildings. These contemporary buildings

include: bale kantoran, warehouse, garage, and warung/toko. The owners of these contemporary buildings mainly confirm that the changes of dwelling activities are the cause of dwellings transformations in Bayung Gede Village. The increase number of dwellers generates pressures to do adjustment to the traditional dwellings. However, the demographical factors are not significant for Bayung Gede dwelling transformation. The main reason for dwelling transformations is the changing values of the dwellers that further change their lifestyle and

activities.
