A recording that presents a new sonic experience, through the recreation of the listening experience, needs to achieve a certain quality so that the temporal information of music played by the player and listened to by the listener is not lost and able to present one's emotional situation to a music within a particular context and meaning. Sundanese Celempung have experienced a revival in the last decade, along with the emergence of various music festivals, art performances and various musical collaborations with other traditional musical instruments and Western musical instruments that bring new possibilities in musical creativity, inclusive of the recording field. This raises several questions: what is the Celempung’s acoustic parameters, what and how is the stereo recording technique used, and how to reconstruct the Celempung’s sound field and evaluate it. The purpose of this study was to identify acoustic parameters, the development of stereo recording techniques and evaluating the results of the reconstruction of the sound field in the Sundanese Celempung musical instrument.

To address this objective, an approach encompassing various methods and techniques relevant to the acoustic parameters of musical instruments, recording, and sound field reconstruction was applied. Semicircular microphone configuration was used for spectral measurements, sound envelopes, and Celempung distribution directions. Mixing the dry signal of the Celempung recordings and the reverberation time signal was done to analyze the reverberation preferences and the mix level preferences of respondents. Celempung ensemble recording uses a number of recording techniques performed in the Sunan Ambu Theater. Impulse responses were recorded to analyze significant objective acoustic parameters in each recording technique. Evaluation of the reconstructed Celempung audio sample was carried out to investigate respondent’s sample preferences and analyze the objective acoustic parameters.

The results showed that Celempung is a musical instrument with a combined spectral characteristic of harmonics and inharmonics which has a fast attack time and decay time. The characteristics of reverberation time and the mix level which tend to be low are preferred by expert and non-expert respondents. Recording techniques that do not have phase differences, microphone angle openings smaller than 130º which give insignificant spatial characteristics, and a larger bass ratio are preferred by respondents. A correlation was found between the treble and bass ratio which showed that the aspect of sound coloring was a significant aspect in determining the recording quality of Celempung. Through evaluation of the results of the Celempung’s audio reconstruction, it was shown that the reverberation time preference (T30) was under 1 second. Based on the findings of the acoustic parameter value of the clarity (C80), it is indicated that Celempung requires high sound clarity so that the player can well distinguish the sound of each string.
text |
