Asphalt Concrete and Hot Rolled Sheet mixes have been widely used in Indonesia. Developments on these mixes are still continuing for better stability, flexibility, durability, and workability, coupled with improved performance in safety and economic application under Indonesian conditions. The Marshall method mix design is widely used for the design of these hot-mix paving -asphalts. The Marshall test procedure is one of the appropriate ways of analysing hot mix characteristics, i.e. Stability, Flow, VIM, VMA, VFB, Unit Weight, max. Specific Gravity and Marshall Quotient. Values of Asphalt Concrete mix parameters are found to be more scattered in Marshall testing under all variations of testing procedures than corresponding values of Hot Rolled Sheet mixes. This is largely attributed to the fact that the stability of Asphalt Concrete mix is affected by inter-locking strength between the main aggregate particles but the stability of Hot Rolled Sheet mix is affected by its \'mortar\' composition. Variations in test procedures show differences in performance of Asphalt Concrete and Hot Rolled Sheet mixes. The stability and air voids (VIM) of Asphalt Concrete mixes are sensitive to test variations in mixing temperature, the immersion period and to small differences in asphalt contents at optimum compacting temperature. The flow and stability of Hot Rolled Sheet mixes are sensitive to test variations in mixing temperature, immersion temperature and variations in the storage period after compaction. In comparing Asphalt Concrete and Hot Rolled Sheet mixes, the first has been found to be more sensitive to variations in procedures in the Marshall test method |
