Description
Summary:Failure of the asphalt layers of a pavement is frequently caused by excessive permanent deformation. Permanent deformation of the asphalt layers is a significant problem in hot climates, particularly when traffic loading is heavy. The performance of Hot Rolled Sheet (HRS), a type of surface course extensively used in Indonesia is greatly influenced by the mortar, thus the physico - chemical properties of the road binder are very significant. HRS wearing course has a high bitumen content and a low stone content. The low stone content mixtures have disadvantages as regards resistance to deformation. Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) has been used as an additive in the binder of bituminous mixes to produce a mixture with high resistance to deformation. This thesis describes a laboratory study of the permanent deformation and other characteristics of a HRS type mix containing blends of TLA bitumen and refinery bitumen in various proportions. The results of Marshall, Wheel Tracking and Indirect Tensile Strength tests indicate that adding TLA to paving mix can produce some technical advantages: - Improve mix stability, increase stability at high temperature, - Increase resistance to deformation over a range of temperatures, - Increase tensile strength. Satisfactory results are achieved when the TLA bitumen content is between 20% and 30% by weight of the blend with 80/100 pen. grade refinery bitumen .
