Description
Summary:
Gears consist of various types and sizes with the materials used and manufacturing processes depend on those two factors. This study aims to determine the manufacturing process of spur gear specimen made of medium carbon steel and knowing whether surface hardening has been done to improve its wear resistance. This research consists of metallography, macroetch, and hardness test. Metallography consist of initial metallography to determine the phases formed in the specimen and final metallography is done to answer the research objectives. Macroetch is done to see the uniformity of treatment on specimen’s surface. Hardness test consist of initial testing to know the hardness of the teeth and middle part of the specimen and final testing to answer the research objectives. Metallographic results show that the phases formed are proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite with flat grains, macroetching and hardness test results show that the treatment on the surface of the specimen is uniform and the specimen has the same hardness overall. Based on these results, it was concluded that the spur gear specimen’s manufacturing process was forging and no surface hardening treatment carried out to improve its wear resistance.
