This final project is aimed to determine wind’s influence toward current in Gaspar and Karimata Strait as well as profile analysis of non-tidal non-winddriven current velocity. <br />

The observed data are total current in measurement station B1 (Gaspar Strait) and measurement station B2 (Karimata Strait) that are obtained from research program SITE (South China Sea-Indonesia Seas Transport/Exchange) on 2011-2012. These data then processed with harmonic analysis that yields non-tidal current. The non-tidal current then filtered using FFT with the same period of dominant wind of 3 years (2011-2013), thus resulting the wind-driven current. The margins between non-tidal current and wind current is the non-tidal non-winddriven current data. <br />
<br />
Data processing results show the influence of winds are strong enough in the Gaspar Strait and Karimata Strait up to 5 meters depth from surface. The average velocity of wind-driven current (wind dominant periodic is 109.6 days) in the Gaspar Strait 9.05 x 10-2 m/s to northwest on the surface layer and 0.61 x 10-2 m/s to north near bottom layer. Wind-driven currents in the Strait Karimata moving to northwest at the surface layer with an average velocity of 2.69 x 10-2 m/s and 0.31 x 10-2 m/s near the bottom layer. Although the current system in the Gaspar Strait and Karimata Strait are dominantly influenced by the wind, it turns out the non-tidal non-winddriven current flows to south. The average velocity of non-tidal non-winddriven current in Gaspar Strait are 0,83 x 10-2 m/s (to south) on the surface layer and 0,01 x 10-2 m/s (to south) near the bottom, in Karimata Strait are 0,24 x 10-2 m/s (to south) on the surface layer and 0,02 x 10-2 m/s (to south) near bottom layer which make up ±10% contribution to non-tidal current. Further research is still required to declare that Karimata Strait is one of the pathway of the Arlindo. |
