Summary: | Muslim civilization reached its heyday in science during the Abbasid dynasty around the year 800 - 1200 AD. Many works were produced by scientists at that time, both Muslim and non-Muslim scientists. But the scientific study of the works of medieval scientists in Indonesia is still small. This leads to our lack of knowledge of discoveries gained by medieval scientists.
Al-Biruni was one of the medieval Muslim scientists who managed to find another method to estimate the size of Earth around the year 1020 AD The method he used was different from the method introduced earlier by Eratosthenes, a Classical Greek scientist in 240 BC.
The retrieval of measurements and calculations by the method requires some data, such as the coordinates of the place, the length of the object and its shadow, the height of the measuring point and the angular data of the horizon depth. These data are processed to obtain the radius of the Earth with both methods. Obtained for Eratosthenes method of good result with error of error propagation result equal to 6,338,65 + 0,24 km. For Al-Biruni method obtained a good enough radius results also but has error results in a large error propagation with the result value and error of 6,219,801 + 879,81 km. The errors of both methods are due to several factors such as the determination of the ideal distance or angle measurements made. |
