One of the

compounds that cause the contamination is a phenol compound. Phenol is

produced from industrial waste such as paper, textile, gas and manufacturing

cokes, plastics and others. Phenol is toxic so its presence in water is very

dangerous. Therefore, the removal of phenol is necessary and among various

treatment method available for phenol removal, adsorption is enviromental

friendly method and the best method for removal waste in water. Carbon is

usually used as a phenol adsorber in the form of activated carbon, but it is

relatively expensive. The material that can be used is

agricultural products waste, which contain cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin,

proteins, simple sugars, water, hydrocarbons, and some functional groups to

adsorb phenol compounds in solution. One such agricultural waste is a Chinese

cabbage. This study aims to determine the absorption of chinese cabbage to

removal phenol from aqueous solution. The adsorbent will make into powder and

treatment using epichlorohydrin and HCl. Then, adsorbent characterized by SEM,

FTIR, and BET. The removal phenol is investigated in terms of various

parameters: pH range 5-9, contact time 20-80 min, adsorbent dosage 0,2-1,1 gram

and adsorbat concentration 10-50 mg/L. Filtrat will be measured using a HPLC

with the mobile phase was methanol : water (70:30 v/v), 0,8 mL/minute of flow

rate at wavelength of 273 nm. The result of adsorption for adsorbent untreatment,

adsorbent treatment with epychlorohydrin, and adsorbent treatment with HCl was

16,58%; 9,78%; and 9,96%.
