Description
Summary:
Steel slag is one of the hazardous waste that can be recycled and reused, such as the utilization of slag as road base aggregate. However, the presence of heavy metals are potentially pollute ground water. The purpose of this research is to know the technical feasibility and environmental impact from three types of steel slag as road base aggregate. Heavy metal leaching methods used are TCLP, static and dynamic leaching test. The three types of steel slag used in this study are blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and Kambara desulfurize reactor (KR) slag with a variety of particle sizes. There are six variation of a mixtures slag as aggregate road base, which the highest aggregate potential power is 128% from a mixture of BF and BOF slag. Therefore, iron and steel slag can be used as road base aggregate. However, the steel slag has five predominant heavy metal parameters that needed to be aware of its existence such as barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), respectively for 16.25 to 17, 75 mg / kg; 5.25 to 10 mg / kg; 7,75-9.75 mg / kg; 641,5- 710.75 mg / kg; and 15.5 to 17.75 mg / kg. The concentration of heavy metals in leachate from three types of slag is under TCLP quality standards in the Regulation 101/2014. In general, concentrations of heavy metals in the leachate decreased on the static and dynamic leaching stage. Percentage of Ba, Cd, Cr, Zn and Fe concentrations that were leached after static and dynamic leaching test also amounts 0.6 to 6.9%, Cd 0.001 to 3.4%, from 0.002 to 4.4% Cr, Zn 0.001 to 9.5 %, and 0.007 to 2.5% Fe. The small concentration of heavy metals leached indicates high stability of heavy metals or the metals in slag are tihtly bound to the slag.
