Description
Summary:
Decreasing of tin production every year causes an increase of the tin price significantly. An increase of the price is an opportunity for tin company such as PT Timah Tbk to develop its capacity. PT Timah Tbk has been making a joint venture with Topwide Ventures Limited, a company established in Nigeria, to develop tin ore deposit located in Jos Plateau area, Nigeria. Therefore, it is necessary to study the ore to be processed. Two characteristics of tin ore from Jos Plateu area that will be processed, namely primary and alluvial indicated ores respectively, were used in this study. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of both primary and alluvial indicated ores, and to determine the performace (i.e. grade and recovery) of gravity concentration process using jig and shaking table.

The characteristics of the primary and alluvial indicated tin ores were determined by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyses. Furthermore, dry and wet sieve analysess were also conducted to determine the size distribution of both tin ores. Each fraction of the tin ores was then analyzed to determine the chemical composition by using XRF. Besides, mineragraphy analysis using optical microscope by grain counting method was also performed. Experiment of gravity concentration method by jigging was performed to both tin ores to produce concentrate and tailing. Both products i.e. concentrate and tailing were analysed by XRF and mineragraphy. The tailing of the jigging process was then processed further by using shaking table. The products of the shaking table, i.e. concentrate, middlings, and tailing were analysed by XRF and mineragraphy.

The process of characterization carried out for both tin ores, i.e. indicated primary and alluvial showed that the type of minerals were slightly different, although the results of XRF analyses showed the similarity of the content and the element between the two ores. Differences were also obtained from the results of size by size analysis of both tin ores in which for primary indicated ore, SnO2 was mainly obtained in the size range of -1180 μm +212 μm, whilst for alluvial indicated ore, SnO2 was obtained in almost of all size fractions with the highest presence was at 212 μm. From the experiment of jigging process, it was shown that the Sn recovery for primary indicated ore reached 86.87%, which was higher than for alluvial indicated ore. From shaking table experiment, it was found that Sn recovery for alluvial indicated ore reached 83.92%, higher than recovery for primary indicated ore. For experiment of overall circuits, it was shown that the recovery for primary and alluvial indicated ores were 93.28% and 86.47% respectively.
