Summary: |
Different types of bamboo materials influence different sound quality of gambang. A classification of musical instrument’s sound quality from different materials can help musician to determine which material that suit their needs. It also helps the acoustic consultant to design an optimum performance room for a specific ensemble. But, there is no research about sound quality of gambang made from different materials. From an interview with one of the finest bamboo traditional musical instrument maker, temen bamboo has more “musical” and “softer” sound than bamboo wulung as a material for gambang.
The objective evaluation has been done through a series of vibro-acoustic measurement to get a sound preasure and vibration data in time and frequency domain. This evaluation aimed to answer the subjective preference of timbre of wulung and temen bamboo. The recorded data will be analysed and compared to each other.

The measurement results show that there’s no significant difference in temporal domain. The significant difference of these two bamboos is in the spectral domain of sound pressure and vibration. Temen bamboo has higher amplitude in first six partial frequencies than wulung bamboo. Moreover, temen bamboo has more overtones in this frequency area. These results are the answer for“musical” sound quality of temen bamboo. Another results show that wulung bamboo has more energy in frequency area up to 6000 Hz. Moreover, this result is supportedwith higher spectral centroid and brightness presentage on wulung bamboo. These results are the answer on softer sound quality of temen bamboo when it compared to wulung bamboo.
