Summary: | Yayasan Difabel Mandiri is one of home industry that produces prosthetic foot, both upper and lower knees. Recently, the foundation has committed an innovation by adding flexible ankle on prosthetic foot. The foundation does not yet have strength and weakness descriptions from each prosthetic foot design so that consumers do not have options to select one of two designs as required. Through interviewing and searching for references, it was found two vital aspects of prosthetic foot for people with disabilities, there are body balance and walk efficiency. Then added with subjective aspect of questionnaire to confirm the quality of life resulting from prosthetic foot. Therefore, this study focused on evaluating two designs of prosthetic foot performance which made by Yayasan Difabel Mandiri in terms of body balance, walk efficiency, and queestionnaire of people with disabilities.
The study conducted in parallel steps based on each aspect. For body balance, it was used force plate to measure static and dynamic balance through Center of Pressure (CoP) movement on seven participants. Data from CoP subsequently was filtered by using Matlab. Indicators used for static and dynamic conditions were Root Mean Square (RMS) of CoP, track distance of CoP, and velocity of CoP. For walk efficiency, it was used seven walking variables to acknowledge body posture deviation when walking that consists of vertical movements of hips and torso, knee flex angle, distance between ankle and fingertips from the ground, basic length and steps. The deviation is known by measuring the difference to the value of a normal person's walking variable. The quality of life aspect is measured by a Prosthetic Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ) consisting of 15 rating scales: ambulation, appearance, frustration, perceived response, residual limb health, social burden, voice, utility, wellbeing, satisfaction, pain, displacement, prosthetic service, self-achievement, and other questions. The last two aspects were measured against eight participants. All three aspects data were tested statistically using two ways anova and t-test for measured significance between the design of flexible and rigid wrist prosthetic.
The result showed significant differences in the design of the flexible and rigid wrist prosthetic foot when used running and shown through CoP speed indicator and walking efficiency. In the static conditions both designs show an insignificant balance performance of the results of the track distance indicator and RMS CoP. Broadly speaking the flexible ankle design further improves the quality of people with disabilities life shown through PEQ measurement with an increase of 12.76%. This study proposes Mean Velocity and RMS of CoP for measuring performance of prosthetic feet. All indicator are conncected becase they can explain the result from other indicator. Therefore, it is better to use more than one indicator. Subsequent research should be better if can more modelling daily activities of human, such as walking up the stairs and on certain slope. |
