Description
Summary:
The purpose of this research is to identify the species of phytoplankton on the sea around Mount Anak Krakatau and its abundance. Sampling was done on 11 – 12 September 2017 directly on surface method and on 17 – 18 April 2018 with vertical method. The sample was identified using microscope and Sedgewick Rafter Counting Cell (SRCC). Result found that diatom dominates the water sample with more than 90% of total phytoplankton. The dominant species of the phytoplankton are Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus sp., Guinardia sp., Hemiaulus sp., Rhizosolenia sp., Skeletonema sp., Thalassionema sp., and Thalassiothrix sp. On 11-12 September 2017, 30 spesies of diatom, 5 spesies of dinoflagellata, and 1 species of silicoflagellate has been identified with abundance number of 489,500 cell/m3. On 17 – 18 April 2018, 28 spesies of diatom, 8 spesies of dinoflagellata, 2 species of silicoflagellate, and 1 species Cyanophyceae has been identified with abundance number of 556.336 cell/m3. There are some phytoplankton that can cause the HAB phenomenon were found, which is PseudoNitzschia sp., Dinophysis sp., Protoperidinium sp., and Trichodesmium sp but because the abundance number of the species is small, the phenomenon didn’t happen. Abundance number of phytoplankton in April 2018 was greater than in September 2017. In September 2017, the biggest value of phytoplankton was found in south west of Mount Anak Krakatau which was affected by monsoon current and upwelling phenomenon in south Java. In April 2018, the high value of phytoplankton abundance was caused by nutrient, especially iron around Mount Anak Krakatau. Phytoplankton abundance has highest correlation with chlorophyll compared to other oceanographic parameters.
