REMOVAL OF ORGANICS FROM SHRIMP POND EFFLUENTS USING CONSTRUCTED WETLAND WITH HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW

Effluent disposal to water effluent of shrimp ponds have a high nutrient content of metabolism and residual feed. Effluent disposal to water bodies will result in a decrease in oxygen levels and excess nutrient content, while the main source of marine aquaculture comes from the water bodies. The use...

Effluent disposal to water bodies will result in a decrease in oxygen levels and excess nutrient content, while the main source of marine aquaculture comes from the water bodies. The use of inappropriate raw water can lead to the emergence of pathogenic virus or disease outbreaks. In this research will be water treatment from shrimp pond by using constructed wetland type horizontal sub surface flow. Mangrove plants as local plants from around the pond will be used as a constructed wetland agent. The aim of this study is to determine the effect and efficiency of nutrient removal on shrimp pond with variation of organic load and detention time. Variation of consentration were adjusted to the COD range in effluent of shrimp pond: 100 mg/L and 200 mg/L with organic loading rate (OLRs) ranging from 10,9 to 123,3 g/m3/day, while the detention time was used for 2, 4 and 6 days. Analysed parameters were COD, nitrogen and phosphate and environmental quality. Constructed wetland without mangrove (control) with detention time of 6 days can remove COD in the range 42 to 68% while with addition of mangrove plant at the same time detention can remove COD in the range 71 to 84%, so that addition of mangrove plant can increase efficiency of COD up to 9 to 29%. Constructed wetland with horizontal subsurface flow can be use in treatment from shrim pond with detention time of 2 days has a greater efficiency removal of 76,5% COD, 98,37% nitrite, 71,78% nitrate, 72,75% ammonia dan 68,46% TP.

text
