Exposure to cigarette smoke can have effect on the

body’s endurance, cognitive function, and organs histology of the active and passive smokers. This

research was design to analyze the effect of exposure to conventional cigarette smoke and electric

cigarette smoke on performance in forced swimming test, cognitive function and organs histology,

having forced swimming test (FST), Y-maze method, and organ index calculation. This study was

conducted in 3 groups of mice, which were control group (not exposed to smoke), mice group exposed

to conventional cigarette smoke (1.5 mg of nicotine or one stick per day), and mice group exposed to

electric cigarette smoke (1.5 mg of nicotine or 0.5 mL per day). Exposure to cigarette smoke in mice

lasted for 13 days. The FST was performed on days 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 13. While the Y-maze

method test was performed the day before the FST, on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13. On day 14, all

mice were ex amined for organ index by weighing the lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, testes,

seminal vesicles, and brain. The results showed that the group of mice exposed to cigarette smoke

tests (conventional cigarette and electric cigarette) for 13 days demonstrated decreased swimming

ability with significant difference (p <0.05) from control group. In testing of cognitive function with Ymaze method, increased cognitive ability in all test groups after 13 days of treatment was observed.

Cigarette smoke exposure for 13 caused significant deacrease (p<0.05) in lung index compared to

control.
text
