MEDIATED ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATION (MEO) USING Ce (IV) AS OXIDATOR WITH Ag (II) CATALYZED FOR ELECTRODEGRADATION OF NONYLPHENOL ETHOXYLATE (NPE - 10)

Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE-10) is one type of non-ionic surfactant prepared from the synthesis of alkylphenol ethoxylate. NPE - 10 is used as an additive in many industries, such as chemicals, paints, paper, and agrochemicals. NPE - 10 that accumulates as a liquid...

Indonesia Theses INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/28892
Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE-10) is one type of non-ionic surfactant prepared from the synthesis of alkylphenol ethoxylate. NPE - 10 is used as an additive in many industries, such as chemicals, paints, paper, and agrochemicals. NPE - 10 that accumulates as a liquid waste in the river can cause pollution and damage the water ecosystem. This study aims to explain the electrodegradation process of NPE-10 using various optimization parameters, such as potential difference, time, and NPE-10 concentration. The degradation product was analyzed using LC-MS instrument. In addition, the CO2 gas content formed is calculated using back titration. The organic matter content of the sample before and after degradation was calculated using permanganometric titration method. The research method used is batch method with Ce (IV) oxidator and Ag (II) catalyst. The cyclic voltammetry study showed that the potential oxidation and reduction values of Ce (III) / Ce (IV) were 1.322 V and 1.148 V, respectively. The oxidation potential of NPE-10 was 1,400 V with the carbon paste electrode as the working electrode. The optimum concentration of Ag (I) catalyst that added to the electrodegradation system was 0.009 M. The optimum electrodegradation conditions were obtained on NPE-10 1500 ppm electrodegradation with 0.04 M Ce (III) and 0.009 M Ag (I) for 35 min with a potential difference of 1.5 V. The percentage of degradation was 85.51%. The LC-MS test results show that there are two new degradation products with predicted M values of 413.2993 g / mol and 603,5924 g / mol respectively. The percentage of CO2 gas formed at this optimum condition is 46.794%. Levels of organic substances in NPE-10 samples decreased by 42.504% after analyzed using permanganometric titration method.
text
