Description
Summary:
In the design of basement wall of an earthquake-resistant building, the seismic load which is used in the design must be calculated correctly. The pattern and magnitude of seismic lateral earth pressure must be evaluated thoroughly to produce an effective analysis in its application. In this study, a verification of the model in FLAC 2D software to the result of a centrifugal test that was carried out by Candia and Sitar (2014) on a research titled “Seismic Earth Pressure on Retaining Structures and Basement Walls in Cohesive Soils” was performed. Furthermore, parametric studies with variations on the site classification and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) were performed. Seismic lateral earth pressure analysis was performed numerically using FLAC 2D finite derivative software. The results are then compared with previous researches, such as research carried out by Mononobe-Okabe (1929), Seed and Whitman (1970), and Wood (1973).

Based on the result of the analysis, it can be inferred that the distribution pattern of seismic lateral earth pressure on the basement walls is a triangular distribution which increases along with observed soil depth. The result of this research is similar with the research carried out by Mononobe-Okabe (1929), Atik and Sitar (2007), and Mikola etc (2014). Seismic lateral earth pressure obtained in this study will increase as the PGA value increases. In addition, the condition of the soil site class also affects the magnitude of seismic lateral earth pressure. The more rigid the soil site class, the seismic lateral earth preassure will be greater, and vice versa. Pore water pressure from this research has similar distribution with the result from Westergaard’s research (1931), which states that the pore water pressure will increases along with observed soil depth.
