Stabilization is a technique to improve soil properties. There are many types of soil stabilizers, among which quicklime is appropriate for soils containing montmorillonite mineral with regard to expansive behavior. Lippo Cikarang soil is a very poor material, as indicated by low soaked CBR value (0.24%), high Plasticity Index (66.9%) and high swelling (5.17%). XRD analysis shows that the soil contains montmorillonite, kaolinite and quartz minerals. The methylene-blue test shows that the soil contains 45 percent of montmorillonite mineral. The dominance of this mineral in the soil explains its expansive behavior. With the addition of 2 percent by weight of quicklime, soil properties are modified. The California Bearing Ratio increases by 232.5%, Plasticity Index reduces by 16.7%, and swelling reduces by 75.6%. The addition of 8 percent by weight of quicklime increases soaked California Bearing Ratio by 548.5%, decreases Plasticity Index by 39.5% and swelling by 93.6%. Based on these results, 8 percent quicklime can be used to improve the subgrade for highway construction. The results of tests on soil properties after various mellowing periods indicate that there are two optimum mellowing periods i.e. 0.25 hours for CBR and swelling, 0.5 hours for PI. For practical purposes, 0.25 hours is chosen as the optimum mellowing period as strength is the main parameter in pavement thickness design. Laboratory test results show that the initial, optimum and final values of soil properties after 2 hours of mellowing are 40.5%, 22.4% and 20.8% for PI; 0.33%, 0.14% and 0.31% for swelling; 15.13%, 22.27% and 16.48% for CBR..Cation exchange has no optimum value and its initial and final values are 104.3 and 345.2 respectively. The range in strength values is relatively insignificant and if this is regarded as the main design parameter then in practice a maximum delay time of 2 hours between mixing and compacting is acceptable. However the swelling observed after 2 hours mellowing (0.31%) is significantly higher than that at the optimum mellowing period (0.14%) and account should also be taken of this when assessing the consequences of delay. text |
