Mining activities at coal deposits have the potential to cause acid mine drainage because overburden and coal itself can contain acid-forming materials. The initial step to control acid mine drainage is by perform geochemical characterization on rocks.
Geochemical characterization by static test (paste pH, Acid Base Accounting, and Net Acid Generating test) has already been done widely. Nowadays, Net Total Acid Producing Potential test-NTAPP is introduced as alternative geochemical characterization test. In the NTAPP test, maximum potential of acidity only based on the content of sulphide and sulfate sulphur so there is no overestimation of acid-producing sulfur content as in static test. Evaluation for NTAPP test is needed by comparing the test result with the result of other static tests.
In this study 5 rock samples of PT CDE’s coal mine were characterized by NTAPP test and other static tests. Next, the result of these tests was verified by the result of kinetic test with Free Draining Column Leach Test method which was done on same samples. In addition, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) mineralogy test and XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) element test were carried out to identify minerals and elements in the rock samples as basic information.
From the test results, it is known that 2 samples are categorized as Non-Acid Forming (NAF) rocks and other 3 samples are categorized as Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) rocks. It can be confirmed by geochemical characterization by kinetic test. Potential acidity of rock samples obtained from the NTAPP test is smaller than potential acidity of rock samples obtained from static test because in NTAPP test, the potential acidity is calculated based on Chromium Reducible Sulphur-SCR, and Total Actual Acidity-TAA, while in static test, the potential acidity is calculated based on total sulphur. |
