GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ACID MINE DRAINAGE FORMING IN WASTE ROCK COPPER-GOLD PORPHYRY DEPOSIT

Porphyry deposits form alteration zones, such as prophylitic and advanced argillic. These alteration zones are marked with suphide minerals appearance, both in ore and waste rock. Mining activities in copper-gold porphyry deposits potentially generate acid mine drainage because of sulphide minerals...

These alteration zones are marked with suphide minerals appearance, both in ore and waste rock. Mining activities in copper-gold porphyry deposits potentially generate acid mine drainage because of sulphide minerals like pyrite are exposed to water and oxygen from air. This potential formation of acid mine drainage requires geochemical characterization carried out through static test and kinetic test. Mineralogical test and elemental test are done to confirm elements or minerals in rock that have potential acid forming. In addition, it is necessary to test water leachate quality to be compared with quality standards from regulation of Ministry of Environment (Keputusan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup no. 202 Tahun 2004).

The test results revealed that one sample has potentially acid forming in low capacity (PAF-LC) and the other four samples have potentially acid forming in high capacity (PAF-HC). Some samples have heavy metals content exceeding the quality standards and water with acidic condition which is able to dissolve more of these harmful metals resulting in negative impact on the environment. Acid mine drainage management is needed by avoiding contact between sulphide minerals with water and oxygen through encapsulation method and heavy metals treatment method with hydroxide precipitation method.
text
