Description
Summary:Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be used as an adsorbent for dyes removal of printing ink

from wastewater. Printing inks contribute to pollution in water because of its use

in the printing industry, offices and households. Fe3O4 nanoparticles able to use

for methylene blue and methyl violet dyes adsorption, however no report on the

use of this material for printing inks adsorption. Fe3O4 was synthesized by

coprecipitation method using precursors FeCl3.6H2O and (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2.6H2O

(mol ratio Fe3+: Fe2+ = 2:1) dissolved in distilled water. NaOH solution was added

slowly into the iron solution with continuous stirring for 60 minutes in Argon gas

atmosphere. The black precipitate obtained was filtered, washed and dried at 100

oC. Diffractogram of Fe3O4 nanoparticle was matched with ICSD database with

particle size calculated by using Debye-Scherrer equation about 9-26 nm.

Distribution of Fe3O4 particle was analyzed by using PSA and the most particle

size distribution about 34 nm. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (0.1 g) used for red, blue and

yellow ink adsorption and get the adsorption percentage about 94%, 97% and

62% respectively, with concentration of printing ink solution is 0.03% v/v, 40

minutes contact time and 100 rpm of stirring speed. For printing ink concentration

0.06% v/v, the adsorption of red, blue and yellow inks were 80%, 94% and 48%

respectively. Using as much as 0.4 g of Fe3O4 nanoparticle can increase the

adsorption percentage of yellow ink up to 80%.

Fe3O4 nanoparticle can be

separated from the printing ink solution by an external magnetic field. The result

of this research have been applied as a practical examination on National

Chemistry Competition 2018. In this case, Fe3O4 that had a larger particle size

about 340 nm, used as an adsorbent for red ink solution. As many as 21% of 84

students had completed the experiments precisely.
