The objectives of the research programme described in this thesis were to assess the engineering properties of a limestone aggregate from Wonogiri and to investigate the laboratory performance of asphalt concrete binder course containing limestone aggregate. A wide range of tests was conducted on the aggregate to evaluate characteristics relevant to its performance as a component of bituminous mixture. A mixture containing limestone aggregate was designed by the Marshall procedure and mixture at the optimum bitumen content was evaluated for resistance to water damage, indirect tensile strength and stiffness modulus and resistance to permanent deformation. For purposes of comparison, a parallel investigation was conducted using the widely used Banjaran aggregate. The properties of Wonogiri limestone aggregate generally satisfy the requirements for aggregate acceptable for use in the production of bituminous mixtures, as indicated by such tests as Los Angeles abrasion, aggregate impact, aggregate crushing, ten percent fines, flakiness, soundness, and affinity for bitumen. The performance of mixture containing Wonogiri limestone aggregate is satisfactory as indicated by the Marshall analysis, the Marshall immersion test, the indirect tensile strength and stiffness modulus test and the wheel tracking test. The results show that the mix has the ability to resist disintegration, cracking and permanent deformation and compares favorably with mixture containing Banjaran aggregate. text
