The use of nyamplung such as raw material for making biofuel and alkyd resin. The productivity of nyamplung seed is very high between 40-150 kg / tree / year or about 20 tons / ha / year and the high nyamplung oil yield is between 37-58%. This study aims to make alkyd resin from nyamplung oil so as to maximize the usefulness of nyamplung plants.

In general, this research is divided into two stages: synthesis stage and analysis phase of research result. The synthesis stage is carried out by experiment variation, oil mol ratio to glycerol, and temperature variation. Variation of oil and glycerol mole ratios used is 1: 2; 1: 3; 1: 4; and 1: 5. The temperature variations used are 210 oC, 230 oC, and 250 oC. In the synthesis stage, there are two stages of the process: alcoholysis and esterification. The time of the process of alcoholysis variation is determined by the solubility of the oil in methanol, and the time of esterification process varies according to the achievement of the 8-10 acid number. Nyamplung oil is classified as non-drying oil which can not dry if exposed to open air, so the alkyd resin from nyamplung oil must be mixed with epoxy resin. The analysis performed is the analysis of acid numbers, iodine numbers, density, viscosity, drying time, color, and functional groups.

Variations in the ratios of oil and glycerol moles and temperature variations affect the value of acid numbers, viscosity, color, and drying time. Higher temperatures and more glycerol will affect the reaction time and the drying time of the alkyd resin becomes faster. The greater the addition of glycerol and the higher the temperature the higher the viscosity of the alkyd resin. The greater the addition of glycerol at low temperatures, the color of the alkyd resin will be even brighter. But at higher temperatures, the greater the addition of glycerol the color of the alkyd resin will darken. The fastest alkyd resin drying time is owned by nyamplung-based resins without passing through the drying and purifying process which is 60 minutes at 50 ° C.

text
