Summary: | Aerobic granulation technologies are emphasized by wastewater treatment researchers and developers around the world as they have a better characteristic than flocculants from conventional active sludge which has been widely used in wastewater treatment industries. These characteristics comprise good settleability, steady shape, high density, strong microbial structure, and good nutrient cultivation Sequencing batch reactor has been commonly used to observe granulation under aerobic condition. Granular can be formed due to the contact between microorganisms as a result of the influence of hydrodynamics force that comes from aeration. This study aims to determine the optimum condition of aerobic granules formation by varying the aeration rate. The reactor used in this study consists of two columns with a height of 1,2 m, a diameter of 5 cm, and the working volume of 2,4 L. In this study, the acetate was used as substrate. The aeration rate is varied at 3, 4, and 5 liter/minute with OLR of 2,5 kg COD/m3day and the settling time of 5 minutes used as a fixed variables. The results showed that the optimum formation of the granular is at aeration rate of 3 lpm variation. Granules characteristics in this variation has the diameter of 2,02 mm, aspect ratio of 0,73, SVI of 67,24 ml/gr, settling velocity of 24,42 m/hour, density of 14,26 gr/L, and organic removal efficiency of 81%. This study revealed that the aeration rate has an influence on the characteristics of the granules. |
