As a form of settlement, kampung-kota is an integral part of a city. History shows that kampung-kota, one of which that exists in Bandung City, has its own legacy even in the history of Bandung City itself. Along with the progress of city planning and development, this so-called “informal settlement” has caused many problems as well as great potentials for the city. In one hand, based on many literatures, kampung-kota has so many definitions. The term also has not been used by legal frameworks. This research then aims to create characteristics indicators of kampung-kota, based on both relevant reviews of Local Government Work Units (SKPD in Indonesia) and various literatures containing the explanations of kampung-kota. After that, this study aims to unravel the complexity of kampung-kota characteristics in the dense residential areas of Kelurahan Tamansari, Bandung City. To achieve those aims, sequentially, this study will use qualitative approach to develop the indicators of kampung-kota’s characteristics, and then quantitative approach to map the characteristics of kampung-kota in Kelurahan Tamansari spatially using “hot-spot analysis”. The result of this study shows that the observed SKPD use different terms, definitions, and indicators in their perspectives toward kampung-kota. Beside that, the mapping of kampung-kota in Kelurahan Tamansari shows that there are various characteristics in each of the different aspects. <br /> <br />
