Description
Summary:Continuing low oil price since 2015 to the lowest experienced in January 2016 have given a significant impact to the most of oil and gas industries in the world, and also to the downstream industries like Petrochemical and Fertilizer Company. A nitrogenous fertilizer like ammonia and urea, the direct production feedstock is natural gas (Methane - CH4) that the price is generally pegged or correlated to oil price. Historically, ammonia and urea prices have followed the movement of oil prices which relatives to natural gas prices. Increase in oil price will increase the cost of ammonia and urea production and vice versa.

Coral Fertilizer Company (CFC) continued to be among world's top producers of high quality urea and one of the largest urea producers in the world, despite increasing the sales volume since 2008 until the global economic challenge in 2016, forced CFC to had a significant loss of profit. Till then, to continue facing the global economic challenge and changing the challenge to become opportunity, optimization and high efficiency in term of operating cost became a mandatory strategic move of CFC organization in all divisions and departments.

Inspection & Material Technology (IMT) Section has to run its business activities in providing the inspection and NDT services to ensure the integrity and reliability of the plants equipment for safe operation especially static equipment and piping, to produce high quality ammonia and urea for worldwide market.

The objective of this study is to look the possibility of doing business in different way to obtain such optimization and cost efficiency in IMT Section without jeopardizing the integrity and reliability of the plants for safe operation especially static equipment and piping, to produce high quality ammonia and urea.

Using the basic concept of strategic thinking, there are two area selected to be focused for this study. One is utilizing the tools and technology like Risk-Based Inspection program where the inspection program one plant is optimized for instance the advanced NDE and metallography based on inspection result of the other plant which both are comparable or identical in service, process and environmental conditions, where the inspection result have been consistent over a period of year. Second one is analyzing the NDT Inspector (examiners) based on their actual utilization and replication availability, to outsource the complete line of examiners.

Both these ways give a positive implication to the company as general.
