Summary: | Microalgae are photosynthethic microorganisms which have ability to use sunlight and carbon

dioxide to produce biomass and secondary metabolites, secondary metabolites in microalgae

are alkaloid, steroid, flavonoid. One of the most widely known microalgae is Spirulina sp. ,

microalgae which is bluish green, a spiral single-celled shape, and has blue pigments

phycocyanin. Previous research was conducted to increase the production of Spirulina sp. by

increasing CO2 solubility using NaOH and monoethanolamine (MEA). Previous study, results

were not so significant so further research is needed to increase CO2 solubility and to optimize

monoethanolamine concentration. This research was conducted to optimize CO2 absorbent

which increase the growth of Spirulina sp biomass. with CO2 absorbent KOH,

monoethanolamine, piperazine using response surface method with factorial design and boxbehnken design. Factorial design result is first order equation (R2 = 99.77%, R2 prediction= -

%) this equation cannot explain increase in biomass because lack of fit. Box-Behnken design

result is second order equation (R2 = 95.37%, R

2

prediciton= 87.63%) without lack of fit ( p

value lack of fit > 0.05 ). Biomass increased 0.104 g/100 mL was obtained from respone

optimizer minitab with monoethanolamine concentration 1.0265 mmol/L, KOH concentration

20 mmol/L, and piperazine concentration 0.3899 mmol/L.
