Although these design procedures aim at producing designs that are safe and economical, they do not include the cost as a clearly defined constraint that should be satisfied Sensitivity analysis of singly reinforced concrete beams is performed to determine the influence of cost and design parameters on their optimum design. These parameters are steel-to-concrete cost ratio, formwork-to-concrete cost ratio, concrete compressive strength, width and span of the beam. The influence of each design parameter on the optimum steel content of the Cost-Optimum Design is analysed. The cost per unit length of the beam represents the cost function to be minimised which includes the cost of concrete, flexural reinforcement, shear reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement and formwork. The optimisation procedure is based on BS8110 code provisions. The deflection constraints of the code limit the minimum depth of beams to a specified lower limit. The flexural and shearing demand due to the imposed loads and the ductility requirements specify the upper and lower limits of tension steel ratio. Assessment of the influence of the design parameters on the optimum cost of a beam is done against the proportions of a reference beam. The results are compared with the result of previously reported similar research. The optimisation procedure ;s implemented using MATLAle version 5.3 text
