In Bandung Regency, the volume of solid waste being handled only reaches 24% of the total solid waste generation. The absence of solid waste processing in the existing transfer stations causes the waste generated to be transferred directly to the open-dumping landfill without any preceding treatment. The rest of the solid waste produced that are not transferred to the landfilling area are either incinerated, buried, or piled irresponsibly. In order to prevent negative impacts to the environment and the local society, this problem needs to be solved by implementing a more sustainable solid waste management which encompasses all aspects of solid waste management and includes appropriate regulations to minimize the volume of solid waste that are transferred to the landfilling area. One of the feasible methods to accomplish such goals is to elevate the function of 3R-based Transfer Stations (TPS 3R). The design of TPS 3R is society-based and has a capacity of 2.23 tonnes/day at the Pangauban Village, Katapang, Bandung Regency. The solid waste treated in the TPS 3R are sourced from household activities and public facilites, which are consisted of 27.04% Organic waste, 11.12% Food scraps, and 61.85% Anorganic waste. Every aspect of solid waste management, from the storage, collection, to the processing, is undergone as an integrated effort to preserve the recovery value of each materials. The alternative for solid waste handling consists of several aspects: sorting of waste using a conveyor belt, plastic bottle shredding, plastic pelletizing and selling of plastics and other recyclable materials to the third party, processing of organic waste using the hollow-brick method, and the design of the transfer station which includes an office, an educational room, a workers room, a prayer room, a parking area for collection vehicles, a toilet, collection vehicle washing area, leachate storage, a drainage system, and also an access driveway. The total area required for the TPS 3R is 1,677 m2. The solid waste processing is hoped to reduce the total solid waste generation in the Pangauban Village, which consists of solid waste from households and public facilities, by 43.29%. text |
