Socio-Economic Transformation of Society in Semarang's Peri Urban (Case : Mranggen Sub District, Demak Regency)

A peri-urban area is defined as a transitional zone, where the rural and the urban characteristics are met. It is located in the outer area of the city boundary. Peri-urban areas are quite far from the metropolitan core following the establishment of new urban settlement. Urban development and increased population affect the city expansion to the periphery. This has resulted in more developed suburban areas and many immigrant living in the suburb. One of the impact of urban development and the increase of population in the peri-urban area is the socio-economic transformation. The Mranggen sub-district in Demak Regency has the greatest population density compared to other Semarang suburb. <br /> <br /> The purpose of this study is to explain the transformation of socio-economics in the Mranggen Sub-district. This research uses descriptive analysis with quantitative approaches to explain the development of the Mranggen sub-district, migration and the household socio-economic transformation. This development includes spatial, population, and economic changes, while the discussion of socio-economic transformation includes several aspects: migration, job structure, household income and expenditure, mobility, and community lifestyle. The result show that there has been a socio-economic transformation of the society that are increasing number of migrants, changes in job structure to the secondary and tertiary sectors, improvement of the household economy, and increased mobility of the society. The characteristics of transformation in the Mranggen sub-district leads to peri-urban characteristics. It is inseparable from the urbanization and suburbanization processes that occur in that area.
