Description
Summary:
Seagrasses and mangroves have ability to reduce CO2 at the atmosphere with conversion of CO2 to biomass. Pulau Rambut is a wildlife conservation area so the condition of its mangrove ecosystem is natural and undisturbed. Determination of carbon stock value in seagrass and mangrove ecosystem on Pulau Rambut is expected to be able to demonstrate the ability of seagrass and mangrove ecosystem as a mitigation of global warming. Therefore, this research is conducted to calculate the carbon stock value in mangrove ecosystem on Pulau Rambut, Kepulauan Seribu. This research is conducted on March until July 2018. Estimation of carbon stock is conducted by determining density of seagrass, biomass of aboveground of seagrass and mangrove trees, belowground of seagrass and mangrove trees, necromass and litter of mangrove, and seagrass and mangrove substrates and also their organic carbon contents. Seagrass ecosystem at Pulau Rambut is an Enhalus acoroides community. The carbon stocks at seagrass ecosystem are 1.82 MgC/ha for aboveground, 1.14 MgC/ha for belowground, and 18.05 MgC/ha for substrate. Therefore, the carbon stock in seagrass ecosystem is 21.01 MgC/ha. There are 6 species of mangroves found at Pulau Rambut, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal, Avicennia officinalis, Xylocarpus moluccensis, and Excoecaria agallocha. Based on the research result, known that belowground of mangrove trees has carbon stock value of 37.05 MgC/ha, aboveground mangrove trees has carbon stock value of 32.69 MgC/ha, necromass has carbon stock value of 24.81 MgC/ha, mangrove substrates has carbon stock value of 52.52 MgC/ha, dan litter has carbon stock value of 0.14 MgC/ha. Therefore, mangrove ecosystem on Pulau Rambut has carbon stock value of 147.21 MgC/ha. The values obtained are in the range that has been reported for various locations and indicates the potential of the coastal ecosystem on Pulau Rambut to play a role in climate change mitigation.
