ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF RETONA-90 AND ITS APPLICATION IN HOT ROLLED SHEET MIXTURES
This thesis describes a laboratory investigation on the properties of Retona-90 and of Hot Rolled Sheet made with this material. For purpose of comparison Hot Rolled Sheet made with 60/70 pen refinery bitumen was also investigated. The Retona-90 as supplied consisted of 60.5% bitumen and 39.5% miner...

For purpose of comparison Hot Rolled Sheet made with 60/70 pen refinery bitumen was also investigated. The Retona-90 as supplied consisted of 60.5% bitumen and 39.5% mineral; the penetration of the bitumen extracted from Retona-90 was 29 (x0.1 mm). To obtain a bitumen comparable with 60/70 pen refinery bitumen as specified by Bina Marga, the bitumen extracted from Retona-90 was blended with 80/100 pen refinery bitumen in the proportions 40:60; this is equal to a composition of 52.4:47.6 of Retona-90 with refinery bitumen pen 80/100. The blend of penetration grade of 80/100 bitumen and Retona-90 bitumen was less temperature susceptible than the bitumen pen 60/70 as indicated by its higher Penetration Index (PI). The optimum bitumen content of the Hot Rolled Sheet was 7.9% for binder containing Retona-90 and 7.7% for bitumen pen 60/70. The Marshall characteristics of samples made with both binder types complied with the Bina Marga specification. Retained stability of specimens containing Retona-90 was greater than that of specimens made with bitumen pen 60/70. Specimens containing blend of Retona-90 and 80/100 pen bitumen were less water susceptible than those made with bitumen pen 60/70 as indicated by the results of the indirect tensile strength test and the wheel tracking test. With the exception of the wheel tracking test, there is little difference in performance between specimens made with a blend of Retona-90 and 80/100 pen bitumen and specimens made with 60/70 pen bitumen. text |
