CORRELATION ANALYSIS BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL ROUGHNESS INDEX(IRI) AND NUMBER OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS (CASE STUDY SIDOARJO – PROBOLINGGO NATIONAL ROAD, EAST JAVA )

The number of traffic accidents is one of the main indicators of safety performance on the road, the lesser traffic accidents occurences in a road, the better the road safety performance. The length of non-toll roads in Indonesia is about 38,569 km thus it is not easy to maintain the road, this resu...

The length of non-toll roads in Indonesia is about 38,569 km thus it is not easy to maintain the road, this result problem such that quality of the road surface can not reach the minimum required level, thus causing the potential of traffic accidents. Road surface quality conditions can be assessed on the basis of IRI (International Roughness Index) and RCI (Road Condition Index). Field observations indicate that road surface quality conditions may affect motorist

behavior. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between the value of IRI with the number of traffic accidents. The correlation of

accident occurrences with IRI value was analyzed first by dividing observation segments into 500 meters per segments and calculating the range of IRI interval values. After that, the range of interval value of IRI and the number of accident incidents per segment are tabulated. The results showed that the level of relationship that occurred between the number of traffic accidents with IRI value is quite weak. This indicates that the road surface infrastructure condition is only one of the many causes of traffic accidents, so it can not be used as the main indicator in doing assesment to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The results of the analysis also show that the number of accidents tend to decrease with the IRI value above 8 and tend to increase when approaching the value of IRI 7. text
