Summary: |
Cikakembang River is a part of Citarum River where there are many textile industries discharge their waste directly into the river. Some of the toxic substances contained in the textile industry effluents have been reported to be toxic and can cause serious damage to aquatic life. The use of biomarkers to detect sublethal impacts of pollutants provides important clues to assess and monitor the environmental toxicology. Prominent among these biomarkers are hematological and histopathological data. The aim in this study was to determine the short-term effect of Cikakembang water to Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) on the response of death, changes in hematological parameters and histological abnormalities in fish gills and livers. The test was performed twice, when there was no textile industry effluent discharged into the river (Test I) and when there was a textile industry effluent discharged into the river (Test II). Tests were carried out for 96 hours with a static non-renewal method. The test were consists 6 concentrations of Cikakembang water, i.e. 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.1% with 3 replications (triplicate). The results showed that the Cikakembang water quality has strongly influenced by the effluent discharge from the textile industry, evident with LC50 values were >100% for Test I and 43% for Test II. The results from blood parameter measurement showed that Cikakembang water changes all blood parameters in Tilapia both in Test I and Test II. Histopathological studies showed that Cikakembang water in both tests deformed secondary lamella gills and also cause liver tissues alteration in Tilapia.
|
