Contribution of Papandayan Mountain Protected Forest Area to the Society Income in Desa Sirnajaya, Cisurupan District, Garut Regency, West Java Province

<p align="justify">The protected forest is a forest area stated by the government to be protected to ensure the ecological functions, especially on the water management and soil fertility to sustain and deliver the benefit for the local society. Nowadays, the protected forest condition is in serious condition because of a significant destruction rate due to uncontrolled land exploitation. The protected forest also functions as local community activity to increase their economy. However, exploitation on the protected forest area requires education and information to the society to plant non-timber forest products in order to gain more economic value rather then crops. Aim of this study is to determine the contribution of protected forest area to the local society income and find the annual income of the society from cultivate crops and coffee. This study applied purposive sampling method through 43 respondents from the total of households in Kampung Baru, Desa Sirnajaya, 361 households. This study undertaken in Kampung Baru, Desa Sirnajaya. The village border is directly closed to the protected forest area of Papandayan Mountain in Garut Regency. Data collection gathered from observation and interview, and continued by qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The observation result found the population of Desa Sirnajaya is 1229 people (361 households). The profession dominated by a farmer. The arable lands of the farmers are inside the area of protected forest, outside the protected forest, and both of them. The primary commodity is coffee, and the rest is crops. The society income strongly depends on the market price of coffee and crops. The contribution of protected forest area to the local society income is 98.4%, the protected area significantly contributed to the local society income. Additionally, annual society income from every income source are Rp24,145,673 or about 1,617 USD for inside the protected forest area, Rp93,028,466 or about 6,230 USD for outside the protected forest area, and 3,350,000 or about 224 USD for non-agriculture.<p align="justify">
