Clean water provision become main agenda for governments as in included in the Sustainable Development Goals to provide clean water access for all. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, there are still gaps of access to clean water experiences by the poor such as inhabitants of urban kampung. Urban kampung is highly dense area in city that is inhabited by low-income households who could not afford clean water provided by formal water providers. Due to economic limitation, the residents in urban kampung of Bandung city, Indonesia, have developed the alternative sources of water supply like individual wells or communal wells. This research focuses on understanding the type water supply systems in the area, evaluating the current system by analysing the water usage and water quality, and finally analyzing the alternative of sustainable water supply systems for urban kampung. The data is collected by field surveys, water quality tests, and questionnaire surveys to domestic respondents of Lebak Siliwangi sub-district. The findings show that for the urban kampung residents, community-based water supply system has significant roles in fulfilling the water demand. 55% of the residents use communal wells or individual wells as main water resources, and 98% of the residents claim that they are satisfied by the present water supply system. However, the results of water test found some issues with the water quality as Coliform group and E. coli are detected in some water samples. This study proposes scenarios of alternative water supply system based on the existing condition for a better and sustainable water supply system.

Keywords: water supply, urban kampung, water quality, communal well, questionnaire, willingness to pay
text |
