ESTIMATION OF TREE AND SOIL CARBON STOCK ON PEAT FOREST (BURNED and UNBURNED) AND DETERMINATION OF REHABILITATION SPECIES FOR RETURNING OF CARBON DEPOSITS IN MENDAHARA-BATANGHARI RIVERS, JAMBI PROVINCE

Peat forests are one ecosystem that has a function to store carbon in very large quantities. However, the presence of forest fires can cause carbon sequestration functions to disappear and can even lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this study was to estimate biomass and carb...

However, the presence of forest fires can cause carbon sequestration functions to disappear and can even lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this study was to estimate biomass and carbon stock in natural forests and post-burnt areas of peat forest in Mendahara-Batanghari rivers, Jambi Province. Vegetation analysis was carried out on various sizes: plot (20m x 20m) for trees, plot (10m x 10m) for poles; plot of 5m x 5m for sapling. In each plot species and tree diameter are recorded. In the non-burned reference forest there were 6 plots, and 10 plots were made in the post-burnt area. Soil samples were taken from each plot (20m x 20m) using core samplers and analyzed in a laboratory to obtain bulk density values and soil organic carbon. Tree biomass is estimated using the allometry equation W = Bj 0.19 D2.37 and the carbon storage of trees is calculated by C = 0.5W. Subterranean carbon deposits are estimated by using allometry KC = B x A x D x C. From the results of measurements, biomass value of non-burned reference forest surface is 130.75 tons / ha and in the post-burnt, biomass value is 0 ton / ha . The value of carbon deposits on the surface in natural forests and post-burnt land were 65.73 tons / ha and 0 tons / ha respectively, while the value of subsurface carbon deposits in unburned reference forests and post-burnt forests was 6190.05 tons / ha and 5636.44 tons / ha. Several species used in rehabilitation to restore carbon stocks are Palaquium obovatum, Dipterocarpus sp, Eusideroxylon zwageri, Koompassia malaccensis, and Tetramerista glabra. text
