Description
Summary:The alteration of the legal status of the Railway Corporation in Indonesia, from the Railway Company to the Railway Public Corporation, has brought changes in the company's vision which is more profit oriented, not to mention after becoming the corporation Ltd. The launching of the Argo Gede trains was triggered by the hopes in gaining more profit. However, the Indonesia's ailing economy hampered the hopes from late 1997 through 1999, marked by the fluctuation of Rupiah against US dollar. This resulted in the rise of operating costs. To comprehend whether passenger's demands as well as the launching of the Argo Gede trains -which required very high investment- are still at profit or not, the writer conducted this study focusing an the evaluation of the launching of the Argo Gede trains. The steps taken in this study are the market analysis, then the technical analysis and finally the economic analysis, pertaining to the launching of the Argo Gede trains. The study concludes that the launching of the Argo Gede trains and also other Argos is still at profit economically at which the level of profit is above 35%. In other words, this is beyond the company's target at 30% while the level of train occupancy is 75% on average. This is beyond the company's target at 60%. The suggestion put forward to the Indonesian Railway Corporation Ltd is for the next two years (2000-2001), the formation of the Argo Gede train chains should not be altered, considering the passenger's demands projection during the period mentioned -based on the development of passengers during 1995-1999- still can be met with the availability of seats capacity
