Protected forest in Gunung Manglayang Timur area requires a water balance calculation as a conservation value that needs to be protected by the surrounding community. This study aims to determine the value of the water balance (evapotranspiration, excess water, and surface runoff) based on the 3 land cover classifications found in the study area namely shrubs, pine forests, and mixed forests. The research was conducted using the On-Screen digitizing method to determine the land classification which then used the F.J Mock and Penmann-Monteith methods for calculating the water balance and calculating evapotranspiration. The results showed that the actual evapotranspiration and surface runoff for 4 years (2009-2012) respectively in the land cover were: 1) scrub (474,106 mm / year and 2374,368 mm / year), 2) pine forest (809,372 mm / year and 2039,102 mm / year), 3) mixed forests (854,305 mm / year and 1994,169 mm / year). Differences in land cover in protected forest areas can cause changes in water balance variables (actual evapotranspiration and surface runoff) so that integrated area management is needed so that the source of the water that functions as a provider of hydrological services remains sustainable. Shrub land cover has lower evapotranspiration value than the other land cover so it is necessary to planting trees that can reducing surface runoff and increasing evapotranspiration by plants. text
