STUDY OF TRIAXIAL TEST WITH DIFFERENT STRESS PATH ON CLAY SOIL AND APPLICATION FOR EXCAVATION ANALYSIS

Generally, laboratory testing to determine the value of soil shear strength and stress path is triaxial test, especially for clay soil. In case of excavation, there is a lateral unloading for the excavation wall side, so laboratory testing is needed in order to model the soil behavior in the field m...

In case of excavation, there is a lateral unloading for the excavation wall side, so laboratory testing is needed in order to model the soil behavior in the field more accurately.

In this research, the clay used for triaxial testing on axial compression (AC) and lateral extension (LE) stress path is Karawang clay soil, West Java, which have high plasticity (CH) in USCS classification. On pre-saturation process, a combination of vaccum and back pressure is used to speed up the saturation of the sample and to provide a high degree of saturation. Furthermore, the obtained soil parameters are used as inputs on finite element modeling which deformation value result would be compared with the result of field monitoring reading using inclinometer. Mohr Coloumb and Hardening Soil model were used as the soil constitutive models.

The results show that different soil parameters were obtained for each different stress path. The value of secant modulus (E50) which obtained on the LE stress path is larger than from the AC stress path. The approximate relation between these two values of E50 is E50 LE = 1,09 E50 AC. The value of internal friction angle, obtained from the LE stress path is larger than from the AC stress path. However, the value of cohesion (c') obtained on the LE stress path is smaller than the AC stress path. In the case study analysis, the parameters using the LE stress path and hardening soil model have deformation results close to the inclinometer record. text
