MAPPING AVAILABLE OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY RESOURCE AROUND INDONESIAN SEAS

This study aims to estimate Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) resources in Indonesian Seas based on 6 years (from 2011 to 2016) daily basis simutation results of high-resolution (1/10°) ocean models, namely Japan Coastal Ocean Predictability Experiment (JCOPE). Thermal energy resources over...

Thermal energy resources over a wide area (9°N to 11°S and from 95°E to 141°E) was estimated, however the analysis is focused only on Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone. The thermal energy recources in this study was defined by temperature differences between water depth of 20 m and 1000 m. The result shows that area favorable for OTEC development in Indonesia as large as 3.773.552.7 km2 with total potential power 451.7 GW/day. Howover some region (e.g. Southern coast of Java, Nusa Tenggara water and Banda Sea) was found unsuitable for OTEC due to high variability of ocean surface temperature (>1.5°C) in that region. This study also shows that occurrence of El Niño 2015/2016 decrease OTEC potential power to 442 GW/day. Meanwhile, occurrence of La Niña 2011/2012 increase the power to 460 GW/day. text
