Utilization of Mahogany Fruit Shell Material in Product Development

The mahogany tree (Swietenia macrophylla King) has hard and non-fibrous fruit and has light weight. The fruit shell of mahogany fruit is a by-product that is not used and disposed of into garbage. Mahogany trees bear fruit at the age of 7-8 years. Mahogany flowering in September - October while fruit season in June - August. One mahogany tree can produce approximately 700 pieces in one season. Mahogany-shaped mahogany-shaped capsule protected by hard skin. Based on data of statistical center of Yogyakarta Special Region in year 2013 Number of mahogany tree cultivated in year 2013 in province of DIY is 3,27 million trees. If the success rate of the business of 20%, it will be available approximately 45.78 million mahogany fruit in a season. In this final project research was using method finding the most suitable material characteristic for a product by analyzing the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of mahogany skin in the form of units and in the form of composite, and the final product proposed in this research is footwear which exposes the uniqueness of the mahogany skin texture and knee protector pad because the hardness characteristic can replace current material in the product. With environmentally friendly and water-resistant urea adhesives, and mahogany skin properties with 54% lignin content that can be applied to products that interact with liquids, and with a material mass of 0.57gr / cm3 makes it possible to make this material a product worn by humans, depens on properties above, footwear and knees protector is one of the products suitable for the utilization of mahogany fruit shell.
