Asbuton is the name given to rock asphalt found in large quantities on Buton Island, Indonesia. Processing of the material for use in pavement construction has been complicated by the hardness of the bitumen, the variability of the bitumen content in the deposit and the high water content. Retona 60, a recent development in the utilization of Asbuton, is produced by a refining and extraction process from Asbuton and contains modified Asbuton bitumen and mineral filler in the amounts 60 and 40 percent, respectively. In the research described in this thesis, the properties of blends of Retona 60 bitumen and 80 pen grade refinery bitumen were investigated. The blends contained Retona 60 bitumen and 80 pen grade bitumen in the proportions (expressed as percentages by weight of the blend) 21/79, 29/71 and 38/62. A gap-graded bituminous mixture (HRS Class B) containing 0%, 30%, 40% and 50% Retona 60 (percentage of the combined weight of Retona 60 and 80 pen grade bitumen) was also investigated. Tests conducted on the blends indicated that penetration reduced and softening point increased with increase in the Retona 60 bitumen content of the blend. Temperature susceptibility reduced but the durability of the blends may be somewhat lower than that of the refinery bitumen alone. The mixes were designed by the Marshall procedure and at optimum binder content all satisfied Bina Marga criteria for Hot Rolled Sheet Class B. Optimum binder content increased slightly with increase in Retona 60 content. Stability, resistance to deformation in the wheel Tracking Test and Indirect Tensile Strength increased with increase in Retona 60 content; retained Marshall stability reduced but not to a significant extent. In general, laboratory performance of the mix is improved by the addition of Retona 60. However in the range of Retona 60 contents investigated, an optimum content did not emerge. Practical and cost considerations, together with an evaluation of the likely in-service durability of the mix, will probably be the deciding factors in the selection of an appropriate content text
