Summary: | <p align="justify">Traffic volume will be growing in line with the population growth. Increased traffic loads cause damage to the pavement structure and wear surface texture. The texture of the surface is the most important aspect of a pavement surface that affect skid resistance. Poor skid resistance can lead to slipping. Slipping can be reduced by providing adequate microtexture and macrotexture. Microtexture and macrotexture are needed to provide good friction between road surface and vehicle tyre in lof to high speed especially in rainy condition. Ethylene Vinyl Acetate application as modifier in Stone Mastic Asphalt mixture with D=22 gradation still expected to meet with functional performance capacity of the mixture. <br />

Laboratory testing is done using Marshall method to determine the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) for each mixture. Then Binder Draindown Test and Indirect Tensile Strength Test. After that, Polished Stone Value test on the aggregate which will be used in the mixture. Functional performance of the mixture are evaluated in OAC condition using British Pendulum Test (BPT) and Sand Patch. KAO results obtained are 4.68% for 60/70 pen bitumen; 5.02% to 3% EVA modified asphalt; and 5.18% to 4% EVA modified asphalt. <br />

The PSV test results demonstrate the value of skid resistance aggregate used in the mixture does not meet the specification. While BPT and sand patches test results show SMA mixtures with EVA modified asphalt has a value of British Pendulum Number (BPN) is greater than SMA mixture with 60/70 pen bitumen. But the depth of texture at SMA mixtures with EVA modified asphalt is smaller than the SMA 60/70 pen bitumen. <br />
<br />
The test results showed that the SMA mixture using EVA modified asphalt gives good performance. Overall SMA mixture using aggregate from Karawang with 4% EVA modified asphalt gives better performance as a wearing layer compared to other SMA mixture.<p align="justify"> |
