One potential candidate for a new renewable energy source is Thalassiosira sp. Besides high lipid, Thalassiosira sp. also produce carbohydrates used as a raw material for bioetanol. The purpose of present study was to determine the productivity of biomass and lipid of Thalassiosira sp. cultivated in a large-scale outdoor-photobioreactor, and to determine total carbohydrates of cell waste. Thalassiosira sp’s. lipid was extracted from wet biomass by the method of modified Bligh and Dyer, and total carbohydrate content of cell waste was determined by the phenol-sulfuric acid method. The results showed that biomass productivity of Thalassiosira sp. cultivated in outdoor and indoor-photobioreactor was 93.8 and 84.8 mg L-1 d-1, respectively. Meanwhile, lipid productivity of Thalassiosira sp. cultivated in both photobioreactors was 1.16 and 2.16 mg L-1 d-1, respectively. Waste cell obtain from lipid extraction contained 4.64% carbohydrates. This carbohydrate percentage was 1.4-fold lower than that obtain from whole cells before their lipid extracted.<p align="justify"> text |
