Description
Summary:Bacteria and fungi that grow in the mouth can cause oral infections, and may include bad breath,

dental caries, and candidiasis, etc. Cinnamomum zeylanicum or True Cinnamon had showed

antibacterial activity against some oral bacteria on the previous studies, but there is no comparison

between antimicrobial activity of Cinnamon bark in powdered bark and bark stick. The aim of this

study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of Cinnamomum zeylanicum acetonic bark extract

using bark stick and powdered bark on some oral cavity pathogens. The crude drug was extracted by

cold maceration method using acetone as solvent. Both extracts were tested for antimicrobial activity

using disc diffusion method or Kirby-Bauer test against Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans,

Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Kirby-Bauer test showed that

bark stick extract having greatest antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans with diameter 34.63

mm for concentration 800 mg/mL of the extract . The smallest inhibition by bark stick extract was

Staphylococcus aureus with diameter 10.15 mm for concentration 800 mg/ml of the extract. Powdered

bark extract also having greatest antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans with diameter 23.70

mm for concentration 800mg/mL of the extract. The smallest antimicrobial activity by powdered bark

extract was Streptococcus mutans with diameter 9.90 mm for concentration 800 mg/mL of extract.

The bark stick extract showed that it have greater inhibition compared to powdered bark extract

against Candida albicans. Both cinnamon bark extract gave best inhibition against Candida albicans

compared to other oral bacteria.
