Summary: | <p align="justify">The culture of Ark was brought to Bengkulu by the Sipai tribes who became soldier at the age of English colonialism. Today it needs an Ark cultural centre as also a public open space. The function of Ark cultural centre is derived from daily cultural activities of Bengkulu community to preserve the culture such as making handicraft, art and dance performance and exhibition of handicraft products. The monthly activities are to accommodate the needs of the local government to stimulate cultural activities, to be facilitated by flexible spaces. To stimulate annual traditional Ark rituals involving lots of people, an art or cultural facility is needed. The philosophy of the Ark cultural centre is to strengthen its identity, so that the architect of the Ark cultural centre can use it to develop the identity using transformation approach. The transformation strategies are deconstruction and decomposition, focusing to the transformation result, which has an iconic building while following the basic rules in performing Ark ritual through canonic transformation approach. <br />

The Ark cultural centre is developed from Tapak Paderi and becomes Central Tourism District (CTD). Tapak Paderi Marina has been naturally formed as public space which crowded by Bengkulu community, but unfortunately it is not able to accommodate the needs of visitors. Observation and analysis are carried out including physical comfort to increase quality of public space which consists of social, psychology, relaxation, interaction and physical change due to activity changes. Visitor rights to accommodate their emotional necessity are also observed and analyzed, which consist of visitor access to site (visually, physically, and symbolically), their freedom to act bordered by rules, physical arrangement, psychological comfort, claim based on need, emotion, and administration. <br />

The design concept consists of general and specific concept. The general concept is an idea of combining transformation method with public space design method. The specific concept consists of orientation by making axis lines to create asymmetrical space. The intersection of axis lines formed a node as orientation. The function zones are based on activities. Recreation zone is placed close to natural vista. Public zone is located at the centre of the site considering space flexibility. Cultural zone surrounds the area to strengthen cultural nuance as an effort to create image and identity. Commercial zone located at the main axis of entrance to attract visitors. Car park area are located off site. Part of the pedestrian is exclusively located at the sea side promenade area to aim at comfort, orientation and traffic safety. Public space cultural elements consist of performance stage and sculptures to strengthen vistas. Vegetation use to buffer negative areas, to protect heat for thermal comfort, and interact people. Shrubs and decoration plants border physical access and strengthen vista. Transformation and multi mass composition is a concept to visualize the process of transformation approach and combination of all the facilities.<p align="justify"> <br />
