Description
Summary:
Statins are drug class of cholesterol-lowering active compounds which consist of 3,4-dihydroxy alkanoic moiety drugs that can inhibit the enzym HMG-CoAreductase which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol. The important active moety in statin drug has similar to 5,6-dehidrokawain. However, the 5,6-dehydrokawain can be isolated from seed of Alpinia malaccensis (laja gowah) in high yield. In this research, the 5,6-dehydrokawain was obtained from seeds of Alpinia malaccensis in 6,8% yield after maceration in acetone and subsequently purification by applying several chromatography techniques. The pure compound of 5,6-dehydrokawain were characterized by infra-red spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, demethylation of the 5,6-dehydrokawain carried out by acidic condition by using a solution of 48% hydrobromic acid and acetic acid as solvent at 105oC for 30 minutes. The succesfully transformation of 5,6-dehydrokawain furnished (E)-4-hydroxy-6-styryl-2H-pyran-2-one in 28.0% yield. This product was characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.
