Republic of Indonesia is an archipelagic country that has the second longest coastline in the world after Canada. But, Indonesia still imports industrial salt until 83,5% from the total demand. It happens because the small amount of Indonesia’s production and the quality of the salt which below the spesification. Therefore, Indonesia needs a technology to increase the production of industrial salt so that later the demand will be fulfilled by domestic production. In this research, the authors will observe the purification of domestic salt using hydroextraction and ethanol dissolution. This method was chosen because of the easiness of technology.

This research aims to obtain salt with an industrial spesification. In the hydroextraction method, the operating conditions varied are brine solution flow rate (0,8-7 L/minute) and the direction of brine solution (from top and bottom of column). Hydroextraction is done for 4 hours with a grain size of 10-30 mesh. For ethanol dissolution, the operating conditions varied are ethanol concentration (20%-v, 40%-v, and 60%-v), temperature of dissolution (25℃, 40℃, and 60℃) and time of dissolution (10, 20, and 30 minutes). The result of purification then tested for NaCl contained using argentometric and complexometric analysis.

The results show that in hydroextraction with brine solution flows through top of column, the increasing of brine solution flow will increase the quality of salt. It is inversely proportional for brine solution flow through bottom of column. In ethanol dissolution, the increasing of concentration of the solution increase the quality of the salt. The increasing of temperature of dissolution increase the quality of salt, except in 20%-v solution’s concentration. The increasing of temperature of dissoltuion increase the quality of salt except in60%-v solution’s concentration. The most pure salt has 98,2%-wt NaCl obatined in hydroextraction with 39 mL/secon brine solution flow through top of column. It is exceed the spesification of industrial salt.
