The stimulant effect of caffeine is used to increase the activity of certain drugs. One of those is paracetamol (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) which is widely used as an analgesic . The combination of paracetamol with caffeine is believed to increase the analgesic activity of paracetamol. Voltammetry is one of the methods to simultanoeus analysis of caffeine and paracetamol. However, the levels of caffeine in the drug are very small compared to paracetamol. Therefore, it is still necessary to modify the electrode which can improve the sensitivity of caffeine measurements. Caffeine molecularly imprinted Poly(xylenol orange) modified carbon paste electrode (CPE-MIP) are prepared to detect caffeine in small amounts and used for simultaneous determination of caffeine and paracetamol by differential pulse voltammetry technique (DPV). CPE-MIP was prepared by electropolimerization in an xylenol orange solution (monomer) and caffeine (analyte) in a phosphate buffer solution as a support electrolyte using cyclic voltammetry technique. The influence of the composition of monomer (xylenol orange) : an analyte (caffeine), pH electropolymerization process, the electropolymerization cycles has been studied to obtain the optimum condition of CPE-MIP. The result showed that the modification can increase the sensitivity of caffeine measurement. The linear range of calibration curve was obtained in 0,007 mM-1 mM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9986 for caffeine and 0,001 mM - 1 mM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9997 for paracetamol. The detection limit of caffeine and paracetamol was obtained at 0.0027 mM and 0.00078 mM, respectively. From the repeatability test, relative standard deviation (RSD) was 3.449 for caffeine and 7,693 for paracetamol. From the roproducibility test, RSD was 3.335. CPE-MIP was successfully used for the determination of caffeine and paracetamol in drug samples with the percent recovery from 99.9% to 100.8% for caffeine and 96.5% to 99.9% for paracetamol.

text
